nf-biffix @ 0.6.2

Provider: Nils Homer
Claimed: 28 Oct 2026 17:36:13 (UTC)
Description: This Nextflow plugin integrates with biffix, an AWS-native control plane, to monitor workflow execution by reporting run and task lifecycle events, managing container resolution through tenant image maps, and tagging AWS Batch job definitions. It solves the problem of connecting Nextflow workflows to centralized AWS-based workflow tracking and orchestration infrastructure. Users running Nextflow pipelines on AWS would use this plugin to enable visibility and control of their workflows through the biffix platform.

Summary

A Nextflow plugin that connects a Nextflow run to biffix, the AWS-native control plane for running and tracking workflows. The plugin reports run and task lifecycle events to biffix, manages container resolution through tenant image maps, and registers AWS Batch job definitions with project tagging. It requires Nextflow 25.10.4 or later and nf-amazon 3.4.4 or later.

Get Started

The plugin is not published to the Nextflow plugin registry. biffix builds and ships it in the coordinator base image. The runtime layer unpacks it into Nextflow's plugins directory alongside nf-amazon and nf-cloudcache.

The plugin reads environment variables set by the biffix coordinator:

Variable Used by Meaning
BIFFIX_RUN_ID observer The biffix run the events belong to.
BIFFIX_INGEST_URL observer Base URL of the ingest route; events go to {url}/events.
BIFFIX_INGEST_TOKEN observer The run's capability token (a secret).
BIFFIX_EVENT_FILE observer Name of the durable events file, relative to the launch directory (default .biffix_events.jsonl).
BIFFIX_IMAGE_MAP_FILE container resolver Path of the run's image map: a JSON object from each declared image reference to the image to run.
BIFFIX_PROJECT executor The run's project, set as the biffix:project tag on each job definition.

The observer requires BIFFIX_RUN_ID, BIFFIX_INGEST_URL, and BIFFIX_INGEST_TOKEN; with only some of them it warns and names the missing ones.

Enable debugging output by adding -debug io.github.nh13.biffix to the nextflow command line to see plugin DEBUG lines in .nextflow.log.

Examples

Building the plugin:

./gradlew --no-daemon test # Spock specs, including the wire schema and ingest limits checks
./gradlew --no-daemon assemble # build/distributions/nf-biffix-<version>.zip

The plugin provides three extension points:

  • BiffixObserver (a TraceObserverV2) reports run and task lifecycle as biffix engine events, posting them in batches to the biffix ingest route and appending to a durable events.jsonl file for replay on run exit.
  • BiffixContainerResolver runs tasks on the tenant's container copy; when BIFFIX_IMAGE_MAP_FILE is set, every process container is looked up in the image map.
  • BiffixAwsBatchExecutor registers every job definition tagged with the run's project (biffix:project).
